I was approved for the American Express Platinum card in May and so far this has been my main card that I throw most of my purchases on. I like the fact that I can transfer my Membership Rewards to quite a few different airline partners and that American Express has my back. I can call them up if I run into any issues with my purchases.
A couple weeks ago I got to use American Express’ return protection for the very first time. Here’s the description from AmericanExpress.com: If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days from the date of purchase and the merchant won’t take it back, American Express may refund the full purchase price (excluding shipping and handling), up to $300 per item, up to a maximum of $1,000 annually per Card account, if you purchased it entirely with your eligible American Express Card®.
I bought a polo t-shirt from ManHoard.com. The website was advertised on Facebook and the clothes looked pretty nice. The prices were cheap and I figured I’d give them a shot! It took 2-3 weeks for the shirt to arrive in the mail, but when I saw it was being shipped from China I began to worry. I was afraid the quality would be cheap and my instincts were right. I received the shirt and I absolutely hated it. The quality was poor and the material made my skin itch. On top of that, ManHoard.com states they don’t accept returns so you better choose the right size.
I called American Express and I explained to them what happened. I had to explain why the item wasn’t returnable, the condition of the shirt, and any additional details I wanted to add. After waiting about 5-6 days, I received an e-mail from Amex stating that I would receive a refund for the shirt! Granted the shirt only cost me $24.99, it’s still nice I was able to get my money back. This is what I pay $450 a year for to carry the Platinum card!
Have you ever used the return protection on any of your cards? Was it as easy as my American Express experience?
