It’s pretty well know that after having your American Express credit card open for 61 days you can request a 3x credit increase and your chances of getting approved are quite high. For instance, if Amex gave you a $2,000 credit limit to begin with, in theory you should be able to request a $6,000 credit limit 61 days from when the account was open. I had opened two American Express cards within 2 months of each other. I opened the Blue Cash Preferred card first and then the Hilton Surpass second. When I requested my 3x credit limit increase on my Blue Cash Preferred card I was instantly approved! I then tried doing a 3x credit limit increase on my Hilton card this weekend and I was denied within a few minutes. The reason why I was denied? According to my letter delivered electronically, American Express only allows 1 request for a credit limit increase every 6 months. So even if you requested a credit limit on a different card and was approved, you need to wait 6 months going forward for all your Amex accounts.
Looks like I won’t be getting a credit limit increase on my Hilton card until at least the fall now. Oh well, I only use the card for gas and groceries so I’m not worried about running out of credit limit.
