In recent years alt right people have been fetishing Japan and making up & believing in all sorts of silly crap about Japan. The most common myth that is still very alive today is the one about Islam in Japan. If you ever wanted to proof that people suck at critical thinking and have serious confirmation bias look no further than the topic about islam in japan.
No, the japanese government doesn’t deny visas to muslims. Yes, muslims can be granted japanese citizenships. There are notable presence of pakistani, malaysian and indonesian muslims living in Japan. And.. the argument there are no terrorist attacks in Japan since they have no muslims… well I’m sorry to say but if anything Japan is actually a good counterargument to use against alt rights not leftists. Since there are over 100,000 muslims living in Japan and there have basically been no terrorist attacks commited by muslims in Japan so if anything, you’re just proving that islam isn’t a violent religion. I’m not here to debate the philosophy of islam(I’m not muslim myself and I honestly don’t want to get into a troll war with internet warriors) but I’m just pointing out the facts regarding the presence of islam in Japan.
So how the f***k did this myth survive? Well basically, it’s confirmation bias. It’s easier to just repeat what everyone is saying, especially if you like what you’re hearing.
In fact, I would go as far as Japan even treats muslims and people who “look muslim” a lot better than Europé and US does. The situation is completely different in Japan since they really don’t have as much contact with islamic world as much as the west does. Not now and nor did they historically. So basically, there’s a lot of apathy, most japanese never encounter muslims in their daily lives so it’s far removed from they day to day routine. Some muslim countries even have good reputation in Japan. Indonesia(a lot of japanese tourists there), Saudi Arabia(associated with wealthy people), Turkey(Istanbul is also popular with japanese tourists).
