I recently applied for the Citi Hilton Reserve credit card to get the 2 nights free sign up bonus for our upcoming trip to Hawaii in January. My partner also applied for the card, so now we’ll have 4 nights covered! Now Citi has upped the offer and is also throwing in $100 statement credit when you spend at least $100 at a Hilton hotel within 3 months of opening your credit card.
I’ll be staying at a Hilton when I go to London in July and I figured when I go to pay for the hotel, I just throw $100 on each card and then be reimbursed. The remaining balance I’ll put on my Capital One Venture card, which I’ll have over 150,000 miles by July.
I immediately called Citi with the phone number that is listed on the back of my card and I was immediately denied the offer. She said there was nothing they could do, but offer me 1,000 Hilton points. I took them, but 1,000 points is pretty much next to nothing.
Next, I logged on to each of our Citi.com account and sent a secured message to the Offers department asking them to match the sign up bonus offer since we just got the cards a couple weeks ago. I received a response the next day and to my surprise, Citi match the bonus on my partner’s card, but not mine! A different representative must have responded on each secured message. Therefore, I replied back to my secured message and stated that Citi just matched my partner’s card and that we had sent our secured messages just minutes apart. Again, I received a response the next time and this time Citi agreed to honor the sign up bonus! I got the $100 statement credit!
Even if you think the bank isn’t going to rule in your favor, it NEVER hurts to ask! In my case, persistence and a little bit of leg work paid off. I’m able to get $200 off my hotel stay next month in London!
