I’ve never been to Las Vegas before so I decided to book a trip on my weekend off and stay at the Hilton Elara. I have Hilton HHonors Gold status because I carry both the Citi Hilton Reserve and the American Express Hilton Surpass cards. By simply paying the membership fee each year on one of the two cards, you’ll earn HHonors Gold status without even having to stay the night at a Hilton hotel! The American Express Hilton Surpass has a $75 annual fee, while the Citi Hilton Reserve card has a $95 annual fee.
The Gold status is already working for me as I was offered an upgrade upon check-in today at the Hilton Elara in Las Vegas! Typically you’re supposed to receive free upgrades with your Gold status when rooms are available. However, since the Elara is a Hilton Grand Vacation Club, they don’t provide free upgrades. Instead they give you 50% off and we took the upgrade! For two nights we paid an additional $80 to be upgraded to a Corner King Suite with Sofabed!
Why I chose Hilton over Marriott
If you’re like me and you don’t stay a lot of nights in a hotel each year, I personally think Hilton is a better choice over Marriott when it comes to obtaining a higher status. HHonors Gold is Hilton’s second highest status, right below Diamond. You can charge your way up to Diamond by spending $40,000 a year on either your Citi Reserve or Amex Hilton Surpass card. Now $40k sounds like a lot, but if you do some manufactured spending you can reach Diamond status in no time. With Marriott you would have to charge $105,000 a year to your card in order to qualify for Gold elite status. No thank you! Marriott hotels tend to be nicer (in my opinion) but I’d rather just have Gold/Diamond status with Hilton and score some free upgrades!
I don’t want to take up too much of my time writing this post as I’m doing it from the hotel room. I want to get out do a little gambling and see what the city has to offer! Without further ado, here are some pictures for anyone that is interested in this property.
