American Express has brought back the 80,000 Hilton HHonor points offer on the Surpass credit card! I already carry this card in my wallet since last spring when American Express had a 75,000 points sign-up bonus.
However, Teddy does not have the Amex Surpass card and we have a trip coming up next January to Hawaii. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to earn a free night at the Waldorf Astoria in Maui! A standard room goes for $550 per night or 80,000 HHonor points. Therefore, this American Express Hilton Surpass offer will be worth $550 for us! Not too bad for a sign-up bonus.
Any time an offer is worth $500 or more it grabs my attention. If you use your HHonor points wisely, you too can turn this offer into a $500+ sign-up bonus!
How to get the most out of your sign-up bonus
Sometimes I don’t get Hilton’s redemption rate. When we were in Italy and Paris last month, Hilton was asking for either $140 per night or 50,000 HHonor points. Spending 50k points on a room that goes for $140 a night is like basically giving your points away for free! Okay, maybe a little drastic, but you get the point. Therefore, we paid out of pocket for some of our nights and decided to hang on to our HHonor points.
What I like to do is save my points for somewhere that I know is going to be more expensive. As mentioned above, we’re going to Hawaii in January with my parents and we’ll be visiting Maui and Oahu. Hilton has a very expensive property on Maui called the Grand Wailea. Without our Hilton HHonor points, it would not even be possible to stay at this resort.
1 night at the Grand Wailea for a standard room goes for $550 per night! We plan on staying there for 5 nights and since my parents will be coming with us, that means we need 2 rooms! That’s a grand total of $5,500! Again, we would not stay here unless we had points.
5th night free!
Don’t forget that when you choose to stay 5 nights with HHonor points, you get the 5th night free! You must have either Silver, Gold or Diamond status in order to qualify for this benefit. This shouldn’t be a problem though since Amex Hilton Surpass card comes with automatic Gold status.
It doesn’t matter if I choose to stay 4 or 5 nights at the Grand Wailea on Maui. The grand total comes to 320,000 HHonor points. We might as well stay the 5th night since it’s going to be free anyway! Hilton will adjust the number of points needed in order to make the 5th night free.
This is the highest offer we’ve seen on the American Express Hilton Surpass card. American Express seems to keep brining back the 80,000 points offer, but I wouldn’t expect it to go higher any time soon. If you’re looking for a good way to top off your Hilton account, this is a pretty generous offer if you make it count.
I like Hilton better than Marriott when it comes to rewards programs. It’s much easier to collect Hilton points since their credit cards earn more than just 1x per dollar spent. For more info on why I don’t like the Marriott rewards credit card, read more here.
